JULY 1978 - GRETZKY AND HOWE

Hockey news continues on the free agent front as we look back to July 1978, when a teenaged Wayne Gretzky inked a multi-million dollar pact with the Indiana Racers of the World Hockey Association. At 17, he was the youngest player in the WHA, in contrast to his idol, veteran Gordie Howe, the oldest man in the short-lived hockey league. The two -- linked forever in hockey lore -- were photographed at the Plaza Hotel on July 5, 1978 for The New York Times. We look back to the archive as we mourn the loss of a Canadian legend. Howe passed away on June 10, 2016 at the age of 88.
