Having the right qualifications is essential if you want to climb the career ladder. Those top jobs with the juicy salaries and sweet perks won't just fall into your lap. You'll have to work to get them, and one of the best ways to secure the qualifications that you'll need to move up in the corporate world is to take a degree online.

HOW DOES AN ONLINE DEGREE WORK?

With an online degree program, you study in your spare time (evenings and weekends) fitting your coursework in around your current job and your family commitments. You'll typically need to devote about 15 hours a week to your course and it will take around two years to complete, although you can take the courses at a more leisurely pace if you need to.

When you enroll, you'll get access to prerecorded tutorials and other course material, as well the details that you'll need to participate in any live class sessions and course discussions.

WHAT TYPES OF DEGREES CAN YOU GET?

You have the option to study for an associate degree, a bachelor’s degree, or a master’s degree. As long as you study with an accredited college or university like Northeastern University, your degree certification will carry the same status as the degrees earned on campus. Always check a school's accreditation status because degrees from unaccredited schools are close to worthless.

WHICH SUBJECTS CAN YOU STUDY?

You'll have the widest choice of degree subject if you study for a bachelor’s degree, but while a degree at that level is good for getting a foot in the door, it won't be enough to secure you that lucrative six figure job you've been eyeing up. So you're really looking at studying for a master’s degree.

If you already love the type of work that you do, then it makes sense to study for a degree that will propel you up that particular career ladder. For example, if you work in corporate accounting and already hold a bachelor's degree, you could follow an online master in taxation program. Once you've completed your online master in taxation degree, you'll be able to qualify for your CPA license, which will give you access to the best jobs in your field, in both the public and private sector.

If you're not too happy with your current career and feel that it offers you limited opportunity for progression, or you simply feel that you made the wrong choice with your undergraduate degree, pick a degree in a field that excites you. You can take a degree in computer science and get ready to protect computer networks from cybercrime, you could study civil engineering and get involved in revamping the country's infrastructure, or you could join the caring professions and study social work, healthcare management or even qualify to become a highly paid physician's assistant.

Those are just a few of the degree programs that you could consider. If you're serious about progressing in your current career or switching to a new field, then spend some time looking at your options. With so many choices for advancing your education and opening up new career opportunities, there's no need to remain stuck in a job that you don't enjoy, or that won't pay you the salary that you deserve.
