IS THERE A MARIJUANA DISPENSARY IN YOUR TOWN

Every few months, a new state seems to be passing a law that enables private citizens to use marijuana for medical or recreational use. In Canada, the nation is on the cusp of decriminalizing and each province is determining what the legal sale of marijuana will look like.

Still, in the U.S., while the state and federal government continue to butt heads over whether states have the authority to authorize use of a substance that is federally banned, local citizens are left to figure out the most important details. A dispensaries directory creates a roadmap to all the places that purveyors of marijuana can go to legally buy various forms of the drug, at least on a state level. Most dispensaries put limitations on the total amount of marijuana any customer can buy in a single month and there are lots of safety measures in place to prevent people from abusing the substance. Having a marijuana dispensary in your town could impact travel patterns and even the culture of your local neighborhood.

WILL A DISPENSARY MAKE YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD RICHER?

All businesses are taxed and marijuana dispensaries happen to make some pretty hefty revenues. Consider that medical grade marijuana can sell for hundreds of dollars for only a few grams and that THC laden candy, snacks, and beverages are also sold for upward of $20 per item. In a single day, a thriving marijuana dispensary can bring in tens of thousands of dollars. If the other local businesses in your town aren’t huge money makers, having just one dispensary can give the tax authority a surplus. Imagine being able to upgrade the computer labs at all the neighborhood public schools or finally get those main roads patched up. There will always be those that are opposed to dispensaries and residents who don’t enjoy living directly next to a business that caters to marijuana patients or recreational users, but the dispensary business is still highly lucrative.

DISPENSARIES, TOURISM AND TRAVEL

For every town that has a newly opened dispensary, there are many others that don’t have one located nearby. That means that those looking to legally purchase marijuana in their municipalities will need to travel to the closest dispensaries they can find. For some people, it’s a matter of hopping in their vehicles and driving up the road, but others may need to plan a long trek to get where they’re trying to end up. In short, it can get congested in areas where marijuana dispensaries are set up, particularly at weekends.

CHANGES IN SMALL TOWN CULTURE

After a medical marijuana dispensary opened in Wilmington, Delaware, patients started to make the drive from towns as far away as Lewes, Delaware, to reach the dispensary. This small town of only 70,000 residents soon saw more traffic, but also a shift in the culture. More festivals were held to extol the benefits of medical marijuana and people most would never think were patients came ‘out of the closet,’ so to speak. Simply put, opinions relaxed about the use of marijuana for medical reasons.

It will likely be years before dispensaries become as common as gas stations and grocery stores. On the other hand, they are becoming more prevalent and citizens are not as reserved as they once were. Try to keep a balanced view of the benefits and drawbacks of having a dispensary located in your neighborhood.
