POSITIVE SELF-IMAGE IS VITAL FOR EMOTIONAL HEALTH

Not everyone is raised to be self-confident or even to view themselves as innately “good”. Many folks suffer from low self-esteem due to trauma or emotional abuse. Many suffer because marketing tells us what we should look like, how we should talk, and how we should behave. When we don’t fit those molds because of a birth defect, an accent due to where we are raised, or a difference in understanding the world around us, it can create inner torment that results in lower self-image.

WHAT WE DO IN RESPONSE

When our self-image is low, we respond by not trying as hard. We lack the self-confidence needed to go out and succeed in our life goals. We stop making goals. We merely exist as best we can without calling any attention to ourselves. On a more serious level, this can lead to actions that can have serious, even fatal consequences. Then we may need the expertise of places like the Corona rehab center. Many times addictions to drugs and alcohol are born out the inadequate feelings we live with and want to escape. Other responses to those emotions could be that we fall into eating disorders or perhaps start cutting ourselves. Escaping the feelings of being “less than” becomes top priority. Unfortunately, addictions and disorders contribute to feeling even worse about ourselves because deep down, we wonder what is wrong with us that we have to medicate or injure ourselves to feel better.

HOW CAN I TURN IT AROUND

Mastering self-confidence is not an easy task and yet at the same time, it is! It takes discipline and a true desire to really want to feel good about who we are, what we look like, and what we do with our time. One suggestion is to seek out a therapist. By using therapy, you are tackling those inner voices in your head that tell you, "you aren’t good enough." You go to the root of the issue and tackle it head on. At times, it gets really difficult. But the true test of emotional strength is the person who perseveres and moves forward, continuing in the healing process. It can take a long time to heal from past trauma that causes you to feel as if you are unworthy, but it’s all worth it and it happens in the time frame that it needs to.

FIND YOUR TRIBE

Your “tribe” are people who understand what it is you are dealing with. If you are a religious or spiritual person, this is a great time to find your spiritual or religious tribe. Some scoff at the idea of turning to a religion or spiritual practice in times of strife, but it doesn’t matter how you arrive at your healing process. What matters is that it helps you feel whole again. What happens if you aren’t a spiritual or religious person? Doesn’t matter! There are social groups and friends out there waiting to talk with you about real life issues. You may meet them at group therapy sessions and connect over coffee. You may painstakingly build your tribe one person at a time as you come across them and learn you have things in common. Your tribe is there for you to confide in. They listen without bias and allow you to express yourself.

THE SELF-HELP SECTION

Society loves to tell us we aren’t good enough and nothing shows that more than the stigma around self-help books. If you ever take a trip around your local bookstore, you will see tons of these books. The reality is, those books are needed because you are not alone! When therapy costs more than your budget allows, self-help books can help supplement the therapy in between those sessions. They have plenty of helpful tips and tricks you can utilize each day to improve your self-image.

Without a positive self-image, we won’t get the career of our dreams. We won’t have healthy relationships with our partners. We won’t be able to teach our own children how to possess a positive self-image. Most importantly, we won’t feel comfortable in our own skin. You are worth the investment to love yourself and love everything about yourself!
