5 REASONS TO GET A PET IN COLLEGE

If you and your college friends love animals, then you might have been thinking about getting a pet. Whether you’re sharing a house with classmates just off-campus or studying from your own home for your Masters of Engineering online, there are many great reasons to consider adopting a pet to call your own.

Remember, however, some student landlords won’t allow pets. So, before you go ahead, it’s always best to check – you won’t want to lose your deposit! If you’ve got the go-ahead from your landlord, then here are our top five reasons why every college student needs a pet.

REASON #1. A PET CAN HELP WITH ROUTINE

It can be difficult to sneak that extra half an hour in bed before a 9 AM lecture when you have a cat sat on your chest batting your face because he wants his breakfast. Or, if you have a dog to walk daily, it’s much easier to make sure that you get the recommended daily amount of exercise.

For college students, getting into a daily routine can help you get the work done and be more productive.

REASON #2. DE-STRESS

Pets can be great for helping us to de-stress and wind down. Maybe you’ve failed an exam or heard that you’re going to need to re-write an essay. It’s devastating for any student to hear that they’re going to have to try again.

Whatever you are feeling stressed about, having a pet can help. In fact, some people are even medically allowed to keep a dog or cat as a support animal to help them deal with stress, anxiety or even depression. There’s no doubt that our animals can have a profound effect on our mood and really cheer us up.

REASON #3. TAKE ON RESPONSIBILITY

For students who have left the parental home and are living on their own for the first time, it is a massive learning curve when it comes to looking after themselves and taking on adult responsibilities. Maybe you grew up looking after a pet. But, even if you didn’t, getting one in college can teach you a lot.

When you have an animal who’s completely relying on you for food and shelter, you have no choice but to be responsible for them.

REASON #4. COMPANY

Today, more and more students are choosing online programs, such as an online Masters in engineering. These programs allow more flexibility, as they’re completed on a remote basis. This makes them popular with older students or recent graduates who’re looking to improve their education further.

But, the problem with learning online is that if you’re living alone and it can become boring and lonely at times with nobody to talk to. Getting a pet can fix this!

REASON #5. DO SOMETHING GOOD

There are so many pets today who need a forever, loving home. Just go to your local animal shelter and you’ll see far too many dogs, cats, and perhaps even other animals that have been abandoned or given up by their previous owners.

Rescuing a pet and giving them the loving home they deserve is a lovely feeling and will surely bring you good karma.

Do/did you have a pet in college? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
