FUN FACTS ABOUT GAMBLING
roulettewheel.jpg

We often think of gambling as a pastime of the 20th century, but there is evidence that the ancient Chinese were partial to laying a stake on a game of chance as far back as 2300 BC, and the love affair with winning money through game has been well documented throughout history ever since.

The Chinese ‘Book of Songs’ makes reference to “the drawing of wood” which was a rudimentary lottery, and so it’s a natural assumption that gambling was a phenomenon across the globe during this time. Gambling has evolved through the ages from using simplistic tokens of wood through to the best online casino experiences. Here are 5 fun facts that you probably didn’t know about gambling.

ROULETTE IS THE DEVIL’S GAME

Folk lore has it that in the 1800s the French entrepreneur and casino operator Francois Blanc made a pact with the devil to learn the secrets of roulette. Not only are the colors of the roulette wheel red and black, but the numbers on it add up to 666: the number of Satan himself.

LOSING LAND

In 100AD the King of Sweden rolled two sixes back-to-back. While you may think that this would have provided him with great fortune, unfortunately it meant that he lost his wager and with it the entire province of Hisingen – the fifth largest island of his kingdom and a key harbor and port. Not a good day for him.

MAKING A MEAL OF IT

We owe the popular sandwich lunch to a game of cards. The 4th Earl of Sandwich was so involved in a game of cards that he refused to leave it to have his lunch; instead, he ordered that his meal be served between two slices of bread so he could eat his food with one hand, and hold his cards with the other.

BLUFF IT

The game of poker is one that is popular the world over, and to be successful you need to have nerves of steel and adopt a ‘poker face’ to keep your face devoid of emotion, but did you know that the word poker comes from the German word ‘pochen’? It means bluff.

THE REGAL CONNECTION

You may think that the images of the kings and queens are random illustrations of regal looking people, but they are all intentional:

- Spades: David, King of Israel and Goddess Athena.
- Clubs: Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia and Argine, which is an anagram of the Latin word for queen, Regina.
- Hearts: Charlemagne, King of France and Judith, a character from the bible.
- Diamonds: Augustus Caesar, Emperor of Rome and Rachel, another biblical figure

Anything can be bet on, and people have placed bets on the most obscure things that you can think of. You may be lucky like the man who, in 1964, placed a bet that before January 1970, a man would walk on a heavenly body or planet other than Earth. He was overjoyed and considerably richer when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon on July 21, 1969. Think outside the box and have some fun, as it may feel ludicrous at the time, but the rewards can be great!
