Yesterday, we held a contest via the TORO twitter feed to give away a stellar pair of Bang & Olufsen headphones. In it we asked for your favourite summer tune. Sadly, there was only one winner but the good news is, for the runners-up, we’ve put together a playlist from your picks. Here it is.

Blurred Lines – Robin Thicke

This release by the somewhat unlikely popstar (who also happens to be the son of 80s sitcom dad, Alan Thicke) seriously reaps the benefits of its producer, Pharrell Williams. And despite the stiff, awkward talent that is #Thicke, “Blurred Lines” has a smooth beach ball beat that carries the tune easily from poolside to patio. To borrow the words of Mr. Thicke, “maybe I’m deaf, maybe I’m blind,” but for whatever reason, it works.

Same Love – Macklemore

A slow, socially conscious beat reminiscent of Tribe Called Quest with less anger and more heart. Perfect for road trips and long runs.

Summertime – Beyoncé

Nothing says summer like the smoky, throaty falsetto that indicates Ms. Knowles is in da’ house - especially when she repeatedly sings the word “summertime.” So, what can we say?  It’s on the list.

Mama’s Broken Heart – Miranda Lambert

A whimsi-comedic country tune in the spirit of Dolly Parton, “Mama’s Broken Heart” is a (don’t) pull up your socks breakup song that favors meltdowns over makeup.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – Summertime

Equal parts actor and rapper (not much of either) Will Smith managed to drop this perfect time capsule of a tune back in 1991.  Breezy beats, clean rhymes and really big tee-shirts (?) keep this song relevant.

Janis Joplin - Summertime

As it happens, the living wasn’t so “easy” for Ms. Joplin but GOD did singing come naturally to her – as naturally in fact as a warm breeze on an August day. In many ways Ms. Joplin’s voice WAS the summer – quiet, heated and quickly fleeting. She owns this song.

Daft Punk – Get Lucky

Wow, that Pharell guy really gets around! At any rate, unlike “Blurred Lines,” this autotuned tune unquestionably belongs to the Daft Punk brand and, come on; it’s a sick track. We dare you to not press repeat. WE DARE YOU!

Beck – Defriended

This track from the original hipster wraps around your ears as if you were listening from inside a boom box atop his shoulders. For this reason it’s summerlike. Otherwise, it’s actually kind of dark.

Bryan Adams – Summer of 69

We would be remiss if this storied tune didn’t show up on a summertime playlist. But it does beg the question: Really?
